Momentum Cycling — the Greg and Matt Story

By Greg Issinghoff

Momentum Cycling is the culmination of a dream that the owners and partners of the shop, Matt Dearing and Greg McKinney, have always had. These two guys have know each other for about the last eight years, starting out as acquaintances racing against each, and then, as they gradually got to know each other better, they realized they had more in common than just racing - they both shared a dream of owning a bike shop. On December 13th of 2008, their dream became a reality.

It is pretty obvious when you walk into Momentum Cycling that it is not your typical bike shop. Greg and Matt specifically did not want a shop that is heavy on inventory. Instead, their idea is to be a service oriented shop to the full range of cyclists, from those experienced riders that know exactly what they want, to the beginner who is overwhelmed by all the choices bicycling has to offer. Their clientele ranges from the 100-pound overweight guy who has just started into cycling to the seasoned racing veteran. When someone comes into their shop, Greg and Matt want to listen to the customer and help them solve whatever need or problem they might have. A new bike is not always the answer, but instead, perhaps something as simple as new seat post may be what is needed to get that right fit for that person.

And speaking of right fits, one of the services Matt and Greg specialize in is custom fitting riders to their bikes. I personally know a few guys that have told me what a huge difference it has made in their riding after being fitted by Greg and Matt. Also, the guys build wheels and they can make the claim that they ride the bikes they sell. So their knowledge of what the bike can do and how it handles is based on first-hand experience.

Both Matt and Greg have been involved in bicycling ever since the training wheels came off their first bikes. They have very similar histories, with both starting out doing BMX racing, and then on into mountain biking and road racing. Greg even ventured into the world of cyclocross and raced for three years up in the Tahoe area. Matt has a lot of time on the road with a tandem, with his wife being the other half of the team for over nine years.

But today, besides running their bike shop, the guys are mostly into road racing. Their enthusiasm for racing extends into providing leadership to young racers by managing Central Valley Racing, or better known to all of us as CVC. They provide organization, coaching, and team management services for the CVC riders, especially to those young racers under the age of 23. An upcoming event that Greg and Matt are currently organizing is a criterium to be held on the streets near the Momentum Cycling shop. All the area racing teams will participate in this event that is scheduled for sometime in late May. So stay tuned for more information.

Momentum Cycling is located at 7591 North Ingram Avenue, between Alluvial and Nees. Go check out Greg and Matt’s new shop and take advantage of what they have to offer.
